Bariatric surgery is a procedure that is performed on dangerously obese people to assist them in their weight loss goals. In order to reduce the amount of food that a person consumes, the stomach is reduced in size or restricted. There are wide variety of surgeries to choose from, but each surgery is an attempt to reduce either the size of the stomach or remove impurities from the digestive system.

Generally the costs of bariatric surgery are very high and most of the time these are not covered by medical insurance unless it directly impacts the health of the patient. Hence, it is a common thing that people look for places where this surgery is performed at cheaper costs. However, it is important that the costs should not overshadow the quality of the surgery. The bariatric surgery done in Mexico is generally less expensive than in other locations in the United States. The surgeons in Mexico are excellent and the medical facilities superb — there is no compromise on the quality aspect. In fact, many people have found the medical attention available in Mexico is the same with the best in the country. In spite of that, the costs of bariatric surgery in Mexico is comparatively more affordable than in other parts of the country.

A gastric bypass is typically done by making a large cut in the abdomen (an open procedure) of the patient or by making a small incision and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery. The second method is known as the laparoscopic method. The stomach is then divided into two sections. A new smaller “pouch” is created. This reduces the amount of food a patient can comfortably eat at one time. Foods that are high in sugar or fat often make a person who has had a gastric bypass procedure done, physically uncomfortable. Healthier eating and change in appetite are the results.
