People that are successful niche marketers are experts at conducting quality market research and understanding areas that are not oversaturated… If you are sharp you can stand to make a lot of money in the niche market arena, but you must do your due diligence and make sure that you can hold a serious competitive advantage when it comes to your product or service. Someone I know decided to become an expert seattle real estate agent. Before they even got in the game, they spent countless hours researching everything there was to know about the subject, finding what the customer wants that the market isn’t providing is crucial!

Last weekend I got together with a girl I am close with and it felt like she was not really paying attention to much at all… I asked her what was wrong and she proceeded to give me this long drawn out story of a big project coming up at work and the fact that there aren’t enough people working on it due to recent layoffs. She was really bummed and said that she thought it might be the end of the company soon. Unfortunately, I find it hard to relate because I’ve been able to make money on the internet for quite some time now and I’m not afraid of loosing my job due to the fact that I’m self employed… Honestly, after knowing what I know now, I would never want to trade shoes with her.

There are almost a million ways to pay the bills but the ones that rich people like to do most often seem to revolve around passive and residual income. Niche marketing on the internet is extremely centered on gaining passive revenue streams… I know a seattle children photographer that has done very well positioning himself in a niche and building a portfolio of stock images that generate him a very nice income stream.

The point is that niche marketing is extremely important when trying to sell a product or service. The richest people on the planet understand the need to be the best at only one thing, leave the rest to others… It doesn’t matter if you’re a seattle photographer, a seattle real estate agent or an ambitious salesperson trying to make money online, with determination and effort you will reach the top of your niche!

Many people are now considering the current trend of sustainable living and consider not relying on grocery stores for their foods. Thus, they are learning to make chicken coops to grow chickens. Raising chickens is an opportunity to have a source of lots of fresh eggs. This can economize families a good amount of money wasted on food and ensure them of better quality eggs. When curious how to make a chicken coop so that you can take advantage of this way of living too, you have to read on further.

Determine first how many chickens you intend to hold and raise. When you are projecting on merely maintaining your chickens for eggs, and do not intend to be producing chicks for meat consumption later, then you will only need only to know how to make a coop for chickens. A chick coop is the same body structure but will need other components than a mature chicken coop. The number of chickens is significant as this will determine how big the coop will be. It is important to give every chicken adequate room for maintaining their health.

The second consideration you will require in learning how to create a chicken coop is the location of the chicken coop. Find a locale that will be exposed to lots of sunlight. Moreover, find a good place where there will be no risk for predatory animals to get at the chickens. The chickens are your investment; you wish to ascertain that you do not lose these investments because of some hungry dogs roaming around.

The last tip on how to make a chicken coop is to insure you can sustain it and that it will be convenient to clean. One great way to make this possible is to have a floor that is built on a little angle towards the door so that you can hose out the dung out of the coop easily. This system will let the dung run towards the natural slant and outside the coop. Remember as well that chicken manure makes organic fertilizer so ascertain you preserve this for your vegetable garden.

This is an abstract from a dissertation by Hjalti Sölvason MBA student at the University of Edinburgh on developing market entry strategies as one of the main challanges facing companies wishing to expand into new market segments.

Managers are always under pressure to maximise shareholder value, and when they face a saturated market at home, they begin to search for new markets outside their home country. In other words they seek geographic diversification.

It makes a foreign market even more attractive if it is growing faster than the home market itself, and as improved communications might be considered a supportive reason for opening up new markets overseas.

Improving productivity is one reason for going abroad in order to obtain greater profits and revenue. Greater profits on overseas investments can be a strong motive for going abroad. Service companies frequently follow customers overseas to prevent competitors from gaining access to their clients.

By using foreign production to lower cost the company can move part or all of its production facilities to the country from which its competition is coming, and enjoy such advantages as less costly labour, raw materials, or energy. Protecting foreign markets is often necessary, which can lead to a change from exporting to overseas investment.

Another reason why a company should be interested in entering new markets is by following the competitor. Once a competitor has set up a production plant in a country, management must decide rapidly whether to follow suit or risk losing the market forever.

„In many cases it is a forced move by the company to enter into new markets because if not, the company would stagnate and be left behind by its competitors.“ – Hjalti Sölvason, August 1996.

Being able to claim that the firm is a “multinational” creates the impression of importance, which can influence its customers. Stockholders and financial analysts expect firms to continue to grow, and those companies operating only in the domestic market have found it increasingly difficult to sustain that expectation. The faster growth of a company, helps also satisfy the management’s desire for expansion.

A company should ask itself the reasons for entering the market and assess the internal forces and capabilities of the company itself. There are also various ways to enter new markets: Exporting, wholly owned subsidiary, joint venture, licensing agreement, franchising, contract manufacturing, management contract and strategic alliances.

The importance of screening markets, analysing market indicators and factors are also factors to address when entering new markets. What does market research say about trends in the industry and other factors like financial risk, have been discussed.

Identifying and analysing competitors in order to bring to the surface their strengths and weaknesses, and the field trip should be made in order to smell and taste the market, and collect primary data. Segment the market into those areas where the company can position its services or products by gathering information about the customers.

Entry strategies and entry modes do vary between competitors. Two companies may perceive different risk as they evaluate the same market and therefore choose different entry modes.

Hjalti Sölvason graduated as a Systems Analyst from the Copenhagen Business School in Copenhagen and is now studying for an MBA at the University of Edinburgh. Hjalti has experience in the IT industry and has worked as a software system designer and programmer.

I always thought the idea of a scrapbook was dumb.  That is until I was given one that recorded a bunch of photos and news clippings of an important time in my life.  It meant so much to me and is great to look at from time to time.  These days there is a huge industry surrounding the idea of scrapbooks and digital scapbooks.

Digital scrapbooking is an interesting concept.  These days with the digital camera taking over, it is much more affordable to keep your scrapbooks in digital format. There are also some great artists who have turned their art work into digital scrapbook materials so all you have to do is copy their art work into your digital scapbook document.

You will need to use a photo editing program, preferrably one like Photoshop or Fireworks.  This way you can combine as much text, images, and artwork as your heart desires in one file.  A great thing about this is that you can choose to print any of your pages as well.  There are some great online printing services that are reasonably priced.

So while you at it, why not create a Blog about the person or events that are the subject of your scrapbook, then combine the two into an interesting website that can be shared with anyone you wish.  If you are not familiar with setting up a blog, contact a blog consultant who can help.

Although many people still like the process and the feel of creating scrapbooks with their own hands, some people preffer to get rid of the clutter and mess and go digital.

Games were always popular on the internet and now more and more games are online and free for the people to use. Most of these free gaming sites are very popular and new are coming up all the time. So the question arises. Why a webmaster will build such a site. As always the answer is simple. Money. Because these websites become quite popular very fast especially with some kind of advertising promotion their repeating visitors user base is growing fast. The result is thousands and thousands of hits every time and this easily converts to clicks and money for the webmaster.

On the other side building such a website is not very easy except if you buy a commercial package with thousands of free games. But doing this you are competing with a thousand other websites that are using this software as well. This is not good in the eyes of the search engine bots because of duplicate content and other issues.

Talking about return of investment for such websites to my knowledge is very low or in some cases very late. With all this competitions this kind of websites cannot depend on search engine traffic and must rely on paid advertisement. Until the user base will grow large enough the return of investment is poor. An example of such a website you can find to the following link. Free games online.

By taking a look in his alexa stats we can easily see that this site is new and search engines just started to index it.

    Let’s wish it good luck!

Bedspreads are ordinarily defined as a decorative bed wrapping. They are larger than a comforter and hang low enough to envelop the box spring. But aside from making your bed look artistically nice, a pink bedspread can be wonderfully cozy and can also be used as a blanket.

When you enter a home interior design boutique or visit a similar website online, you’ll be dumbfounded at the countless patterns, colors and dimensions of bedspreads. The several selections are a designer’s bliss but can be hell for Do it Yourself first time decorators. To slim down your choices, reflect on a specific idea that you would fancy in your bedroom. If you want to something smooth and deluxe, opt for a silk, satin or microsuede sheets in red, black or white. Going for a homey, relaxed feel? Pick out a padded or quilted bedspread in plain or floral patterns. If you want your bedroom to have that cool vibe then choose bright, funky colors in symmetrical, striped or circular patterns. To further maximize the beauty of your new bedspread, it is advised that you buy similar and matching comforters, bedskirts and pillow cases too.

In selecting the right bedspread for your bedroom, it is also important to take into account the durability of the material. You wouldn’t want to change your sheets regularly as this could get expensive and tiring. If you have pets or children, choose a fabric that’s easy to clean and preferably machine washable. Avoid fabric types that you may be allergic to.

Make sure that you pick out the right bedspread size for your bed. Buying the wrong size can leave your mattress exposed or make it drape extremely low. Also, check your budget. It is easier to narrow down choices when you have a specific amount in mind.

The history of the USA contains immigration of many races. It already started tens of thousands of years ago, when prehistoric Asian hunter-gatherers crossed the dry land that would later become the Bering Sea, and eventually spread out over the whole continent of North and South America. Their descendents would later become known as American Indians. Then the White people came, spreading over the whole continent in no time at all.

Only shortly afterwards a disturbing part of American history started: the period of slavery. Presently it’s difficult to understand the reasoning of this era, but we are still confronted with it, in different ways. The presence of the Black population in the US is very prominent nowadays: the country has come a long way, even to the extend that at the moment I write this, an African-American is running for the presidency! Yes, African-American history in America has changed (tremendously|for the good}, which definitely restores ones faith in humanity.

Nevertheless there are still many remains of the period of Black enslavement and discrimination. Presently several of those have become collectable parts of African-American history. Under the general lable Black Americana those items are often collected. Sometimes by African-Americans who want to preserve part of their personal history in the form of African-American memorabilia, but also by other ethnicities who perceive them als important memorabilia of a time that was much different from our own, and that must not be forgotten.

Among these Black Americana or collectables are every day objects like kitchen utensils, but also originals or replicas of objects from the slavery period itself. Many books about this period can be found, and indeed should be read. African-American memorabilia is a field of interest that reminds us all of how life should never be, and by keeping this reminder in view we contribute to more profound consciousness of African-American history.

    An Introduction to Home Working

Ask anyone to describe their perfect job and working from home would come high on their wish list. Whether home working is an option provided by your employer or a decision you have taken yourself in starting your own business, the thought of just getting out of bed, walk over to a workstation and just start work is very appealing. No commuting to and from the office and working hours to suit yourself.

But is home or flexible working right for you as an individual, or good for your business as an employer? Well there are many advantages and disadvantages. Home or flexible working brings new responsibilities for both the employer and employee. Equally with advances in mobile technology it has never been easier to set up your own business to work from home.

    An Increasing Trend

From a business point of view, allowing staff to work at home on either a full or part-time basis can bring a range of business benefits, from increased productivity, greater staff motivation to effective use of your premises. Advancements in mobile technology has contributed enormously to the increase in opportunities for working from home.

The spread of home working using the internet or telephone opens up a new range of possibilities with regards to the way a business works and structures itself. Computers, mobile phones, broadband and mobile broadband all play a role. For the individual, becoming self employed and working from home has also never been easier. If you have a laptop and mobile phone the opportunity is there, it’s just deciding what you want to do. So home working is becoming a way of life for many individuals and businesses, but what is home working?

Some employers will offer selected employees the opportunity to become a teleworker, whereby an employee can undertake their role from home utilising various types of technology, which is installed at the employees home by the employer. The employee will remain in touch with the business and other teleworkers. Some businesses, for example the utility companies who require gas, electric and meter readers, will class employees undertaking this type of work as teleworkers or outworkers.

Some individuals opt for the self-employed work life. The self-employed will operate their business from home, offering a product or service such as web development or business consultancy from home. In these types of roles, the individual can often plan their day to suit their own needs. I know one web developer who often works well into the early hours of the morning as this is when he feels most productive.

Others such as a painter and decorator, plumber or gardener, whilst providing their services away from the home, use home as the office for paperwork such as pricing future jobs and preparing invoices. I know of several painters and decorators who work Monday to Thursday, but use Friday’s to go out and price up future potential work. That is one thing to bear in mind when setting up as self employed, you need to allow time to find or prospect for future work.

Some types of work are more suitable for flexible working than others, the following list is not exhaustive, but will give some guidance:

    • Telesales and Marketing
    • Customer Services
    • Professional services & consultancy i.e. HR Administration & Accountancy
    • Certain types of administration work
    • Data input
    • Creative/Graphics
    • Writing, editing, translation and research.
    • I.T. Support & Programming

Many of the above have a common theme and that is that as long as you have access to a computer and a phone, you can undertake almost all of these tasks from home.

The shift towards home working does not mean employees only work from home. Splitting time between the workplace and home is the most productive solution, as you want employees to attend meetings, therefore keeping them informed and involved. Continued face to face interaction within the business remains a key requirement.

With the introduction of flexible working regulations, employers now have to seriously consider employee requests to work flexibly from home, especially if they have parental responsibility for children under 16 years old, disabled children or they are carers for other adults with disabilities.

Employers and individuals also need to consider what equipment will be required to ensure that an efficient business operation and working environment is set up.

Many accessories can complement office furniture to suit the home or office environment.

    The Pros and Cons

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of an employer allowing employees to work from home or use their home as a base for at least part of the working week? It’s clear there are a number of benefits to the employer:

    • Staff Retention is increased
    • Wider pool of applicants to recruit from e.g. disabled people who prefer to work from home.
    • Productivity gains through having fewer interruptions and less commuting time.
    • Reduced stress and sickness increasing staff motivation.
    • Savings on office space and facilities.
    • Sales staff closer to clients, rather than being based at the office which could be miles away.
    • As with life if there are advantages then there are also disadvantages to home/flexible working:
    • Management of staff and monitoring performance
    • Possible deterioration of key skills and quality of work.
    • Capital costs - training and providing suitable equipment, this could include adaptations to meet Health & Safety standards or meet the needs of disabled workers.
    • Difficulties maintaining staff development and upgrading of skills.
    • Information security risks
    • Increased telecommunication and I.T. costs
    • Sense of isolation and communication problems amongst home workers.
    • Staff morale and difficulties in maintaining team spirit.
    • Home working may not be suitable for certain types of jobs.

One thing I particularly miss is the Monday morning office banter about what you did at the weekend of how your football team has fared compared to others. Often the camaraderie that is unique to an office where you get to know people well over many years is also lost where home working becomes an option.

Are You Suited o Home Working?

Having identified the types of work that is suitable for flexible working, the employer must satisfy themselves that employees are suited to this type of work. It’s likely they will need a number of skills in key areas to allow them to work away from base.

    • Time management and self discipline
    • Motivation
    • Communication
    • Technology

We must make it clear that home working is not suitable for everyone and care should be taken, because allowing one person to work from home will set a precedent that others will want to follow. Others will see an attraction to working at home particularly on a lovely summer’s day, rather than being stuck in an office. I must confess that as I write this article, I am sitting in our summer house at the bottom of the garden with the laptop on a glorious summer’s day in June.

An employer you must have a clear idea of how home/flexible working could fit in with the needs of the business. A set of house rules need to be established and maintained, i.e. priority is given to requests from parents of young or disabled children. My wife for example, plans her day around the hours of taking the children to school and collecting them later. She maintains that she is extremely focused on what she needs to achieve within those six hours in between. No distractions or idle chit-chat that will occur in an office environment.

In some cases the employer is legally obliged to seriously consider requests for home/flexible workers. Employee with parental responsibility for children aged 16 or under, or disabled children who are under 18 and receive disability living allowances can request a range of flexible working patterns from their employers, this includes the right to work from home. There are similar rights for employees who are carers of adults.

The introduction of flexible working can also lead to an changes to employment contract terms and conditions. In a majority of cases an employee’s place of work is listed in the written schedules of their employment contract. It’s important that when an employee starts to work from home it may be necessary to review and amend their employment contract.

The following is a list of contractual aspects an employer should consider when implementing a home/flexible work policy:

    • Stated hours of work
    • Identify core times when employees undertake to work and/or are contactable.
    • Extra duties or responsibilities that may need to be assigned in addition to those already agreed
    • Identify the terms regarding the supply and insurance of any equipment that may be required, these should clearly state ownership and use, especially that its not to be used for personal use.
    • Clearly identify what the employer will reimburse to cover additional expenses the employee may incur, its especially important to identify the calculation method when costs are shared i.e. utility bills and telecommunications
    • Procedures to be put in place if either the employee or employer wishes to terminate the home/flexible working arrangement.

Allowing home working the employer should remember that they still have health and safety responsibilities for people who work at or from home; and you are likely to have to provide and maintain equipment for employees to use, these include:

    • Workstation complete with suitable task chair
    • Filing cabinet, shelves or storage
    • PC/Laptop with office software, email and broadband internet connection
    • Dedicated business telephone line
    • Printer & fax machine
    • Stationery and Office Supplies

The range of desk chairs available will suit any home working environment.

IT equipment and software can be expensive so it’s important to ensure it meets your genuine business need and is compatible with your existing systems. Technology changes almost daily and with today’s advances the establishment of virtual teams where employees work together despite working at home can be set up easily and at reasonable expense. These teams could be two employees talking over the phone or you could use more hi-tech solutions like high speed internet, instant messaging, webinar and video conferencing.

Providing all this kit and equipment it is important to ensure your business insurance cover is extended to cover home workers, as their home insurance is unlikely to cover this, however they should check with their insurer and extend their policy to cover working from home.

Workers who undertake home working should check with their local council and mortgage company the position regarding using their home as a work base, and whether they may have to pay business rates for the portion of their home they use as an office. Some self employed businesses will involve use of a vehicle which will need to be parked up at certain times of the day. For example painters and decorators and builders are likely to utilise a transit van or pick up truck in the work. You should therefore ensure that neighbours will not be offended by having the vehicle parked in the street or to block light out of their homes. If you are to park a vehicle at home, let the neighbours know, it may save a lot of hassle later.

The employer needs to ensure that employees take care of business equipment and information in their possession, it’s important to establish procedures to be followed if any item is damaged or lost, especially data and intellectual rights.

We all agree that flexible working offers a wide range of benefits to both the business and employees, but it needs to be carefully managed to be successful. Procedures should be put in place for managers to monitor and assess home workers, this is the most significant managerial challenge an employer will face. It can be helpful to measure their effectiveness in terms of output rather than the hours of work. Agree set goals and deadlines for particular projects, and ensure these are being met, give feedback promptly and sensitively if things go wrong.

Ensuring home workers have access to training can prepare and help employees develop the necessary skills they need. For staff who work alone a sense of isolation is one of the main factors most likely to make home working fail, therefore it’s important to ensure procedures are put into place to make people feel part of the team, these should include:

    • Frequent 2-way feedback sessions about work and work related issues
    • Regular visits to the workplace
    • Inclusion in social activities for home based workers.
    • Clear procedures to be followed and contact lists for when things go wrong.

When the employees job is home-based from the start, make sure their initiation is undertaken at your premises, this helps the home worker focus and be productive if they have a chance to establish a clear idea of the people they will be working for.

To effectively maximise office space, employing office fit out contractors is a wise choice, to advise on effective space usage, use of lighting and health and safety regulations in the office environment.

A Brief Health & Safety Obligations Check List for Home Workers

If you use your home as your main business workplace, you must carry out a health and safety risk assessment to identify any possible hazards to yourself, workers, visitors and other members of your household.

    Possible hazards include:

    • Using work equipment at home, including electrical appliances
    • Your workstation set-up
    • Handling loads
    • Hazardous substances and materials
    • Psychological hazards, such as stress or loneliness
    • Fire
    • Slips, trips and falls
    • Excessive noise or vibration

Slips, trips and falls are one of the most common causes of injury in the work place. Even something we take for granted on a daily basis, such as walking up and down the stairs, should be regarded as a risk to safety. Evaluate whether a hazard is significant and if it is, whether you have taken enough precautions to make the risk as low as you reasonably can.

    You need to consider:

    • Your home and those who live there - including vulnerable persons, e.g. children, the elderly, and new and expectant mothers
    • The work done in your home
    • The equipment in your home
    • Emergency procedures
    • First aid provision

Five steps to a health and safety risk assessment

    1. Identify any hazards.
    2. Decide who might be harmed and how.
    3. Assess the risks and remove them or, otherwise, reduce them as far as is reasonably possible.
    4. Record your findings.
    5. Check the risks regularly and take further steps if needed.

    Conclusion

With advancements in mobile technology, working at home has become far easier to do. It can offer a very balanced way of life and the rewards can be significant. In the current economic climate, many who have been unfortunate to suffer redundancy or reduced hours are considering setting up their own business to work from home. Having worked in the corporate world for over twenty years and just suffered redundancy, it is certainly an option to consider.

But working from home needs to be considered carefully. Is it right for you? Is it right for your employer? What impact will it have on my homelife? Many advantages, but also many disadvantages and bear in mind the health and safety requirements and risks. Your health is important so choosing the correct office furniture to meet your needs is a must for any home worker to ensure you have the proper facilities for home working.

Another thing to consider, which is often overlooked, is that once you have got your work into your home, how do you get away from it?

If you are lucky enough to really love your work the temptation can be to do it all day long. Eventually this can lead to burn out and can also take away some of the pleasure of working, even if it is something you really love. Therefore it is important to have balance in your life, even more so when you work from home. Some suggestions to help to achieve this are to make sure that when you have lunch, for example, remove yourself from the work space and don’t eat at your desk, get some separation from the work when you are not doing it.

Remember that just because you work from home it doesn’t mean that work has to take over your life.

Sun Microsystems has added the solid state drive (SSD) management technology from its popular “Amber Road” data storage systems to the latest release of the open source ZFS file system.

OpenSolaris 2009.06, to be released today, includes a number of updates to the ZFS file system, including technology that automatically places certain workloads on flash, such as random writes and reads, that can benefit from the higher performance of SSDs. The fully integrated flash support in ZFS can optimize large-scale pools of high-performance storage by designating flash devices as write or read accelerators. The pools are then automatically managed by ZFS to achieve high performance across many workloads, eliminating the need for small caches on RAID controllers.

SSDs have been one of the hottest data storage technologies in the last year, as users have been willing to pay up for much greater performance even in a down economy. But to take full advantage of SSD technology, users need management software to fine-tune performance. Sun is breaking new ground by offering that capability for free.

“Sun is taking a very aggressive position here,” said Objective Analysis analyst Jim Handy. “SSDs are nice, but without proper software support, they really don’t do much to help the system out. That’s why SSDs’ penetration in the PC is still significantly below 1 percent. There is a lot of value in the kind of SSD support software that ZFS includes.

“Interestingly enough,” added Handy, “when a data center uses a system like OpenSolaris with ZFS, the addition of a pricey SSD will actually help data center managers reduce their storage costs, since they can avoid wasting precious budget dollars on a bunch of slower enterprise HDDs.”

Solaris Gets CIFS, Block Storage Support

Native support for Microsoft CIFS has also been added — in addition to NFS — as a high-performance kernel with integrated features and support for Microsoft Windows semantics for security, naming and access rights, making for transparent use and sharing of files across Windows, Linux and Solaris environments.

Sun has also added new support for iSCSI and Fibre Channel block protocols into the Solaris kernel, so systems running OpenSolaris can now serve as both a client and a target under just about any storage topology.

COMSTAR, the Common Multiprotocol SCSI Target, can turn any OpenSolaris host into a SCSI target that can be accessed over the network by initiator hosts. COMSTAR breaks down the task of handling a SCSI target subsystem, such as disk or tape, into independent functional modules, which are then glued together by the SCSI Target Mode Framework (STMF). The initiator hosts can be any platform, such as Solaris 10, Windows, Linux, or VMware ESX.

    The Best Open Source Storage?

All the storage features are integrated into the Solaris Platform to take advantage of its core functionality, such as fault management, networking, multi-threaded scaling, performance, security and resource management.

That integration, said Margaret Hamburger, Sun’s product line manager for storage software, gives ZFS an advantage over other open source file systems like BTRFS and ext4.

“I don’t see the same capability wrapped around an enterprise-level operating system like Solaris,” she said.

Hamburger said ZFS and OpenSolaris “make it easy to turn any server into a storage server. Everything you need is in the operating system.”

The ZFS file system is at the heart of Sun’s Open Storage efforts, the company’s fastest-growing product line in recent months.

Illuminata analyst John Webster said he’s not aware of another open source storage project that can compete with Sun’s Open Storage efforts, but he added that “there is a move by some storage vendors to establish an open standard hardware/software model along the lines of Amber Road.”

That effort, which hasn’t been announced, is being headed by Sun and LSI, Webster said.

Oracle, which is acquiring Sun, has said it plans to keep Sun’s hardware business, including its storage business.

    New Networking, Virtualization Features

OpenSolaris 2009.06 also includes new networking and virtualization features.

Project Crossbow, Sun says, is a “complete re-architecture of the network stack” that “becomes the new standard for how networking at the operating system level is done.” The project provides networking capability designed for server virtualization in combination with multi-core, multithreaded processors connected with high-speed network interfaces.

Project Crossbow’s virtual network interfaces offer full resource management to simplify complex deployments of multi-tiered applications on a single machine or across an entire data center. Users can scale the workload of single or multiple network interfaces across multiple core and processor systems “up to the largest systems available in the world today,” and increase network efficiency and performance. Sun called the new features “major milestones for an enterprise operating system.”

The OpenSolaris platform also offers server virtualization technologies in the form of Solaris Containers, Logical Domains (LDoms) for Sun CMT systems and the Xen-based hypervisor “to give users a complete virtualization platform built directly into the OpenSolaris OS.” Solaris Containers can be used to create virtual servers for consolidating hundreds of enterprise-class workloads onto a single system.
