I’ve heard both sides of this debate from different marketers over the years, but primarily the answer most would give to that question is yes, it does matter. That for some reason, Google gives more “appreciation” to a .com or possibly a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have said this to me say that it is undeniable to see this is true because when you look at the search results you get when you enter something into the search engines, the top sites are quite often going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is usually true, however I have another side to that statement that you must think about when choosing which extension you should buy.

There are thousands, hundreds of thousands more .com and .org websites on the Internet than there are .info. This fact on it’s own would explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domains in their page one listings. I am not saying that it is not a possibility that the search engines prefer .com or .org, I am simply bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domains should be on page one of the search results most of the time, there are 10’s, even 100’s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I have mostly .com domains. I like them because when people enter websites into their address bar they tend to type .com. So, by just having a .com you will be sure they arrive at your website. If the website you were looking for in a .com has a .info available and you buy it, then when the person goes to type it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were really paying attention, they will be typing in .com. Therefore, instead of going to your website, they would go to someone else’s.

I do have some .info domains however and as far as a SEO stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. Therefore, for SEO reasons it doesn’t seem to matter which extension you choose. The SEO techniques side comes down more to your keyword phrases and in-bound links than to the extension you choose.

So, when purchasing your domain it comes down to your preference. Do you care ifthey unintentionally enter .com instead of .info (or even .net)? How you answer this question will help you chose which domain extension you buy.
